We have been following this story for some time, so it was exciting to read that $23 million has been designated for the construction of the Hemphill Street Connector Project.
The connector, from Lancaster Avenue to West Vickery Boulevard, will feature a four-lane divided road that goes under I-30 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The project includes a new bridge for those tracks.
Whether you live or work in the Near Southside area, the Hemphill Connector is of vital importance. Currently, the area is experiencing something of a renaissance with a number of new businesses taking root and over 1,000 new residential units in the planning stage or being built. Connectivity to and from the Near Southside area is key for this sustained growth.
Much work remains including a final funding plan and bids for work. The council is expected to provide final authorization of the funding needed in June. We are hopeful that after 15 years of discussion and planning, the project can finally begin.
